“Polygamy?” says the mainstream Mormon Church. “We gave that up long ago.” Not so, claims noted LDS poet and author Carol Lynn Pearson, who examines the issue as it has never been examined before. Any member of the LDS Church today who enters the practice of polygamy is immediately excommunicated. However, Pearson claims, polygamy itself has never been excommunicated, but has an honored and protected place at the table. It has only been postponed, a fact confirmed by thousands of “eternal sealings” giving a man an assurance that he will claim as wives in heaven the two, three, or even more women he has sequentially married during his lifetime. No such opportunity is available to women. Through her own personal stories, those of her ancestors, and the thousands of stories that came to her through an Internet survey, Pearson shows the power of the Ghost of Eternal Polygamy as it not only waits on the other side to greet the most righteous in heaven, but also haunts the living—hiding in the recesses of the Mormon psyche, inflicting profound pain and fear, assuring women that they are still objects, harming or destroying marriages, bringing chaos to family relationships, leading many to lose faith in the church and in God. Mormon historian and author Dr. Gregory Prince says of The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy “Carol Lynn Pearson has hit a home run in her quest to illuminate both the damage that Mormonism’s de facto practice of polygamy continues to inflict, and the route to a better, more humane place. Those who truly hope for eternal polygamy or who resent any call to institutional reform will be upset, but countless others will rejoice that she has shown ‘a more excellent way.’ ”

I truly appreciated the time and efforts she put into this book. Especially interesting were the personal accounts that she had included from the survey she conducted prior to putting this book together. Even though the mainstream LDS church no longer practices polygamy, the history of it for those who have studied it in depth is deeply troubling, as is Section 132 of the D & C and other references in the temple and elsewhere that have long given many mormon women concern over whether it will be required of them in the eternities. As an LDS woman who was in the church most of my life and has recently left the church, I found so many of the other women's descriptions of how these things made them feel and how it impacted their feelings of self-worth in the eyes of God and in their church. It helped me realize that the struggles I have had with this topic my whole life are not rare to me. I had always thought it was my own weak faith that had caused me to struggle to understand or believe how this principle could ever have been inspired by God. I left the church eventually because I came to believe it was not ever commanded by God and led me to research other things in our history and I felt it best for my emotional health to step away from the church. But please understand that her book is not an "anti" book. She loves the church and still remains in it unlike myself. She is looking for ways to have this doctrine disavowed so that we can finally put it to rest. But don't be afraid to read this book if you are an active member. She also is, and is very devoted to the faith. Her book is not in any way trying to bring anyone out of the faith. She is merely shining a light on something that has been truly problematic for so many.

Carol Lynn does such a beautiful and heartfelt job in conveying the pain it has caused to countless women and men and then spells out in such inspired and beautiful detail her solution to overcoming this problem for the church and escaping once and for all the old ghost that still haunts the hearts of so many. She draws attention to it bravely and with amazing clarity spells out ways to eliminate it once and for all. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever wrestled with or been troubled by this topic. It is well worth your time to read!

I enjoyed reading this book. I have felt similar feelings to those expressed by the voices in this book, but felt like I was alone in my struggles with the concept of eternal polygamy as expressed in the LDS church. It was comforting to learn that I was not alone and that many others, both male and female, share my feelings. I recommend this book to others who may be looking for answers and struggling reconciling polygamy with a loving God and eternal happiness.
I love Pearson's work, and she has outdone herself with this labor of love. Every Mormon should read this.
As one who has studied Mormon polygamy more than the average individual, I didn't expect to learn much about the subject by reading this book. But wow. Did I ever get to see the toll it has taken on the modern day LDS church. I never knew that even my wife, during the time we were members of the church, had some of the same feelings as the women described in this book. Pearson's book should be read by every member of the LDS church. Polygamy is always brushed off as being "no longer practiced" and nothing beyond the first manifesto given by Lorenzo Snow. There is so much more to Mormon polygamy and while it is not practiced on the same level as the early church did, it is still very present and something that women particularly have to wrestle with, but really, everyone. These stories demonstrate that so well.

I think the only thing that I really disagree with Pearson on is the last chapter in which she tries to make a case for Joseph Smith disapproving of modern Mormon polygamy. I don't think there is any way that the modern LDS church can renounce polygamy because it is intertwined with so many other facets and doctrines of the church. While Pearson's dream for the church is admirable, it's more than likely never going to happen. Regardless, read this book!
Wow. This is a beautiful, loving look at the mistake that was polygamy and the urgent need to fully repudiate its ghost. I have lived with its ghost. I have shoved it in the corner of my mind that represents "things not to look at too closely." This book has helped me confront it for what it has been, continues to be, and how it needs to go away completely for our church to progress as God mandates it does. Hurrah to Carol Lynn. God bless you and thank you.
Amazing book. Whether a person is a still practicing Mormon or one like myself who found this book during a faith crisis this book tells it as it is. It is a MUST read for anyone who wonders whether polygamy REALLY is something from a God who is loving and sees everyone on the same playing field as equal players.
Carol Lynn gracefully and eloquently explains with her beautiful writing style the difficulties and challenges that face the LDS culture with eternal polygamy. Her words deeply resonated with me as I have found myself directly affected by the church's inequitable sealing practices in my personal life, preventing me from being sealed to my own wife due to her being a widow. I am so grateful to Carol Lynn for addressing such a difficult topic and doing so with love, and reverence. Thank you! I have already recommended this book to many of family members and family!
This is a heart-wrenching read, but worth it. Carol Lynn Pearson makes a convincing case that a belief in eternal polygamy has in the past and continues to create tremendous pain and damages families.
